I like to keep it hometown with the pro teams hailing from Indy, the Colts and the Pacers, and in college a Notre Dame fan...let the football jokes begin...
It's been a rough year for my teams to say the least, but i am enjoying the "JV Squad" Pacers beating all odds and not only making the playoffs, but making a push to the 4th seed!

LU Fan,
when are you going to register? You are the one that showed me this site and you always post but you don't register. If you register we can IM you when we have a "private conversation." Since I am in this post I might as well reveal my teams. College hoops: Any Philly team. Partial to St Joes because my old teammate from high school is an assistant there, Monte (Mont- A) Ross. Phil Martelli is pretty cool to talk to as well. He did our radio show last year when they played Liberty even though he had 300 other media outlets hounding him. College football: Used to be Penn St but I really don't follow it like I used to. Pro Hoops: Sixers. I root for the Wizards to do well only because I lived most of my adult life in Northern VA and it is terrible the way Bullets/Wizards fans have suffered. Pro Football: EAGLES 2006 Super Bowl Champs. Hockey (is that still a pro sport?) Flyers. Baseball: Phillies/Orioles (they are in 2 different leagues so that is ok). I will pull for the Nats now though except when it comes to the Phillies making the playoffs or something.

I don't want to hear any of your complaining if we're bringing pro teams into it. I've been a Cincinnati Bengals fan for most of my life. A decision I've been regretting for the past 15 years. Although it seems things are turning around, it does every year.

I do feel bad for Ohio pro football teams but hey, what are you gonna do? There has been some suffering in many towns but I would say now that Red Sox fans are finally over their curse, I wouls have to say that the Cubs. I feel bad for Philly fans right now but it will change. We can get our teams to the big game so we will win again sooner rather than later. When I was a kid we were and still are the only city to have all 4 major teams in championship play in the same calandar year 1980. Lakers over Sixers, NY Islanders over Flyers, Raiders over Eagles (1981 SuperBowl but 1980 season) and Phillies over KC Royals.

Thank God for Pete Rose! The Sixers loss hurt because the Lakers didn't have Kareem for game 6 and Magic played center at 20 years old! The Flyers got swept but they got caught up in the midst of an Islander Dynasty. The Eagles had a bad outing from QB Ron Jaworski. 4 INT's to the same linebacker! Ouch. It was still a fun year though. LUconn don't be hatin on the City of Brotherly Love. I expect that from Sly but not from a fellow Northeasterner like you.

As a Cincinnati native, I am SHOCKED to learn someone from Connecticut would adopt our Bengals as their team. And even more shocked to learn they'd stick to the decision. I'm guessing you probably came on board during our 2nd Super Bowl with Boomer & Ickey.
I have to tell you that I have basically given up on the franchise as long as the Paul Brown's sons own them. I can't stand those guys. That's why I began with a fresh start when the Texans began.
As for our Ohio sports teams, we own the baseball comparisons with the PA clubs (you guys rented some old Reds for that title in '83). Philly gets the nod with the Sixers but the NFL is a toss up.

Ok Sly,
revisionist history is what you are practicing right now. The only thing OH has on us was the Reds of the mid 70's. Football is not a toss up because the Steelers won 4 SuperBowls! The Eagles have been in 2. Cinn has been in 2 and the Browns can't kick the door in Thanks in large part to John Elway....Baseball? The Pirates won in 79 and The Phils in 80 (not 83 that was the Sixers). The Reds won 2 in the 70's and again Cleveland can't get through the door. OK Hoops. We only have the Sixers and we have won 2 championships and played in the Finals in my lifetime several times: 77,80,82,2001. Cinn doesn't have a team and Clevland, well they can't get through the door thanks in large part to Michael Jordan! (I see a theme there in Cleveland). So statistically I will have to disagree with your OH VS PA comparison. Come on PA Medic, HarrisBurgFlame, back me up ;D
And 83 was the year we rented some old Reds...But we lost that World Series thanks to Joe Morgan and Tony Perez being so old and aweful. So thanks for letting us have your throw aways. (At least Cal Ripken got a ring out of the deal as a rookie).

I can't stand those guys. That's why I began with a fresh start when the Texans began. Yeah, I was about 7 or 8 years old. I loved Icky and the cool stripes on the helmet were icing on the cake. As the years dragged along, it was apparent I had chosen poorly. My peers make fun of me and I've been saying just you wait until next year for about 15 years now. I just can't see switching teams. I've already invested so much (i.e. I'm gonna stick it in everybody's faces when they win a superbowl). I used to be a Mike Brown hater too. But with Marvin at the helm, and the tandum of Carson Palmer and Chad Johnson, I've never felt so confident in saying, next year is our year.

I agree wholeheartedly with you about Paulus, LUconn. But with the recent NBA thirst for point guards he'll probably only stay at Duke one year. The McDonalds game has turned into mothing more than an open audition before the draft. Our local kid Gerald Green will never spend a day at Okie State. And can you believe how many of these guys are 19- & 20-years-old? These 5th years of eligibility are weak. Guys now are playing a year of prep INSTEAD of college ball to lift their draft status. Not one kid that played in the McDonalds game is ready for the NBA. Sly, Gerald Green is 20 yrs. old so the age agreement Davey Stern is working on will not apply to him, he's still not ready if you ask me but he's the only player that should maybe consider making the jump. I hope the rule is passed. Jermaine O'Neal made the dumbest comment about the age limit, saying it was racist are you kidding me.

formerplayer --- Yeah, I'm familiar with Gerald's time at Dobie prior to Juice recruiting him over to Gulfshores. But its no longer a matter of being NBA-ready. Its all about being lottery-ready. And by all indications, that's where he is going to land. I'm curious to see where your Eagle friend Daniel Ewing lands.
Scar --- Speaking of revisionist history, you conveniently forgot the '90 World Series sweep of the Bash Brothers (or should we say Juice Brothers). And I was well aware of the Steelers run in the '70s. I was noting Philly's lack of success.

I've got season tickets to University of Michigan football
I usually go to at least 3-4 Detroit Pistons playoff games
I go to several Detroit Tiger games and if I am lucky I go to the occasional Detroit Lions and Red Wings game (I have been lucky enough to attend a Stanley Cup finals game).
Fortunately I have several connections to get tickets to different sporting events!!

BelcherBoy,
you have to go to the Breslin Center in East Lansing. What an electric atmosphere. I try to catch a Tigers game during the summer when I go see my in-laws in Holt, MI just outside of Lansing. Go STATE!!!
Sly, my apologies for forgetting the 90 Reds. PA still has Ohio beat. In fact I would say that even without the Western PA teams, Philly still has been better overall than Ohio. We have had some parades at least. Other than the Reds Ohio has not had the success of Philly. Not fair to pit a state against a city but, oh, well.

Still PA I appreciate the backup. Man you sound like you have that old strand of flu that got sent out by mistake Did you hear about that? It is potentially deadly because it was an old strand that was wiped out years ago. few people today have the immune system to fight it. It was sent out to 5000 labs in 18 countries by mistake. One vial was sent to Richmond, VA. I'm sure you will be alright though PA. Remember, don't drive yourself to the hospital. Wait for a medic, or in your case I guess you can drive yourself in the ambulance. Do they let you take it home?

For the record, Cleveland brings nothing to the table. I was comparing Cincy to Philly heads up. Not bad considering Philly has like 10x the population and yet we stand up very nicely in both professional & collegiate success.
At least PAmedic didn't have far to go to receive medical attention. But then again, he knows the credentials of the guys he works with. ;D

My favorite college team would be the Fightin' Texas Aggies...oh by the way, Psalms 75:10 says that "All the HORNS of the wicked also will I cut off..." My pro teams are the 5 time Super Bowl champion Dallas Cowboys. The underachieving Dallas Mavericks, and the 2 time NL West Champion and 4 time NL Central Champion Houston Astros, and the 1998-99 Stanley Cup Champions Dallas Stars.
But I'll take my Ags any day of the week ;D

Here's the ENTIRE text of the verse for the sake of accuracy:
"All the horns of the wicked I will also cut off, But the horns of the righteous shall be exalted."
It appears the Longhorns have been getting plenty of exhaltation in their matchups with the Agricultural & Mechanical college the last four years.
I always love hearing about sawing varsity's horns off when ATM is losing to Tech once again or even Baylor.
By the way, Zack, welcome back to the board. Do you think anybody will ever take that head baseball coach job at A&M? They've been turned down an awful lot after they were so quick to can Mark Johnson. I guess I shouldn't care with both UT & BU in the CWS. But its amazing how far that program has fallen at Olsen Field.

So, is Augie going to celebrate his second place trophy this year? The Ags are still in the running to get Horton from CSF or Childress, the pitching coach from Nebraska. I have to say, t.u.'s baseball program has been on the upswing since they got rid of the old man Gus. Mark was a good Ag, but his time had past when he couldn't win in Omaha or get to Omaha at least.
You can't tell me that the NCAA has been a litle helpful in getting tu back to Omaha with who they put in their Regional and Super Regionals?
One more thing...I left off the rest of the verse because it didn't apply to the t-sips in the 3rd most liberal city in America behind San Fran, Boston and now Austin
|
|
|
Post by Sly Fox on Jun 20, 2005 15:33:58 GMT -5
The NCAA didn't give the Horns a national seed despite being #1 nearly the entire season and finishing in the top-8 in both major polls. So I hardly think they gave them too much assistance. They truly are that much better than everybody else. Horton is not leaving SoCal for BCS. Its simply not happening. Now pitching coaches are another matter. I hear the Tulane coach has joined the ranks of those telling Byrne thanks but no thanks. As for Austin, you are basing your liberal premise on ancient history. The tech boom of the '90s completely changed the face of the community and it is now primarily conservative Republican (much to the tree-hugging hippies dismay). Didn't you see in your NLJ where the pastor at Great Hills BC was just given an honorary doctorate at LU during commencement this past month? It doesn't get much more righteous than that, does it? ;D
