Congrats on finally getting membership. Did you receive some notification or did you just try logging in and it worked?

Hi Sly, and thanks so much for the congrats. I'm actually happier about all this than I really should be... anyway. As far as getting on, I have tried several things, then got my son (25 year old) to try some things, and I tried more. I actually got a code from the proboard site, which didn't work, I assume because it was for the "big" site rather than the Firehouse; then got another code from my son trying some things through our own site, and in the midst of all this I attempted to log on and got a message that I needed to await approval by a supervisor. This morning I hopped on, tried to log in, and presto, it worked. I still wasn't sure, but then when I saw my post under grm with the words "new member" I thought, "Yes, my life is complete, and has been validated." I'm not a one-star general!
Again, thanks, and God bless.

As far as academics, you have to maintain eligibility at our school just like everywhere else. We have lost players for failing to meet that criteria including this summer. But to paint all basketball players with the same brush is unfair. Its tough to maintain a high GPA when you have all the responsibilities & schedule of a basketball player. I know my GPA probably would've been horrendous if I were on the road all the time. Like Scar mentioned in his post, let's try to keep these discussions going in a positive direction wherever possible. If someone needs to be called onto the carpet then go right ahead. But these veiled attacks from "guests" are uncool. No attack... this was something I was told by a fellow LUer and was trying to see if it was true or not. I figured this was the place to ask. As someone who doesn't know everyone (like some of you guys) I just have to go by what I hear and I am hearing a lot of negative stuff. I have no problem registering... but really the only difference between being a guest or registering is that you get a hotmail email address that no one will knows and sign up as opposed to making up a catchy name like "the outsider."

You can still have "the outsider" as a moniker when you register.

The MBB team gpa was a dismal 1.7 (the outsider). More disturbing to LU fans is the lack of Commitment to Classroom success. There were more afternoon staff golf outings this past spring than supervised study halls. And this is what we get. It is the job of the head coach to make this a priority. He can blame his asst. coach and change staff members, however @ the end of the day it is his own lack of Discpline that leads to such an unacceptable team gpa. Yes, bball teams travel, miss class, have assigments due on gameday and have to take make up tests. It is the head coach who must set an organized, disciplined action plan for his STUDENT athletes. Coaches who do have good team gpa's. A side note: having watched a hand full of games this past season the lack of commitment academically is only surpassed by the lack of commitment to team defense. And the carelessness in the classroom can be seen with the carelessness observed in our passing and ball handling.

OK Kid, Let's say you're 100% right. I refuse to criticize last year's staff, so let's put it all on Dunton's head. But we are now on the threshold of a brand new season, so save this thought: you're in for a good year if you're a LU fan, and I believe that you'll be happy with the effort of this staff at season's end. Hopefully, it will all translate into an acceptable GPA, and a great finish in the Big South.
Now, having said that (and you can call me on it at the end and I'll be a big boy about it) what in the world is everybody, or anybody.... I know that not everybody is, on the warpath about after a very respectable season? No, we're not satisfied or contented, but man o' man!... it must have been dangerous to be on the staff when Mel was at the helm if you guys were on the loose then. Whenever I read these things, I wonder if there is an element out there with a large bur under their saddle (I just love talking like a cowboy).

As the resident Texan on the board I'll forego the Cowboyspeak (primarily due to my disdain for a certain NFL franchise due north of me). But I agree with the sentiments nonetheless.
I always love when colllege kids come one here having every problem int he world figured out. Could there be some improvement in the way academics are handled in the athleteic department? Without even knowing the situation since I am 1500 miles away, I can say yes without question. Is it fair to post anonymously and take pot shots? Absolutely no. If you have solutions to these problems, then by all means bring them to us. But I really don't want to see this board slide into the depths of some where unsubstantiated claims or made against the school and its programs. All that said, I'm going to leave the thread in place and open. But let's not force my hand by going too far.

ok there, tough guy!
seriously- I hope that GPA situation is rectified. Even if the NCAA doesn't care- LU is supposed to be different and set an example of excellence.
otherwise, we're no different than anyone else- I hope this year is a great success, but its FOOTBALL season now! GO FLAMES!

PAmedic,
I love those little waving flags, but would'nt they be a little more esthetically pleasing if they had a Patriot, a Red Sock, and a Hub-type B on them?
(Now that I'm a member I'm trying to act like "one of the boys" by engaging in friendly banter.)

Well, timely enough, the summer grades show that LU B-Ball team members finsihed 29 classes, and achieved a 2.95 team gpa. So, for all those whose concerns are sincere, this should be a good sign, and hopefully bodes well of things to come.
As a thought, I'll bet if some of us guys sat down to play tiddlywinks, it would get very competitive, very quickly. It's hard to win a championship at anything, and if it were easy, every team would win all of its games and all of their athletes would be model citizens with 4.0's. Anyway, I hope those LU boys and their great point averages didn't hurt Dunton's golf game too badly.

That is great news! I'm on your side with this one grm but I have to ask - Miller flunked out - did his GPA figure into the 2.95? If so, the other kids really blew it out! If not, that could explain part of the huge jump.
Thanks.

That's a great question, Harrisburg, and without speaking authoritatively, my instincts tell me that the gpa does NOT include Elijah's, as I don't believe he completed his work, or received a gpa. You might remember that he was dismissed for "a violation of the University’s academic policies" which is almost certain to mean something other than a simple "flunking out."
Great talking to you

Nice going to all the guys who buckled down and got it done this summer- and to the coaching staff for evidently making sure it happened. THATS what were're talking about.
