I didn't know UNCC was headed to the A10. Why would you leave CUSA for that league?

Without Louisville, Cinci, Depaul, or Marquette, CUSA is going to be absolutely worthless. A10 at least has Xavier, St. Joes, George Washington, etc.

disagree. St. Joe's is mediocrre most years - the last 2 arre the exception. GW is just another team and X doesn't do much for me either. The marquee team in the pathetic A10 was Temple and look at them now. That's a bad league. I can't see where the A10 is any better than CUSA minus UofL and UC.

It's better than CUSA's new marquee team, Memphis aka the NBDL.

Maybe - but not much better. I think the A10 is pretty bad. They had one team in the NCAA tourney and SJU was terrible OOC. plus that league set VT's program back 100 years. I think the league stinks.

C-USA and A-10 are comparable in hoops with C-USA leagues better in football & every other sport. I think geographical interests were the biggest factor in Charlotte makign the switch. I think they panicked when Louisville & Cincy jumped and were afraid they'd be the last one standing if they hesitated.
Poor move in my opinion.

The other thing I heard is that many of the A10 members are dissatisfied with Commisioner Linda Bruno and her leadership. Apparently she's not the most forward thinking according to some.

Also, Conference-USA is becoming more of a football-focused league with all of these changes...the A-10 is more basketball oriented which fits better with Charlotte.

UNCC is a huge school. However they don't have much support for their basketball or sports programs in general relative to it's size. My guess is Lutz doesn't make much more than Marshall, if at all. Last report I saw, Lutz made a base salary of 225,000...

Exactly, not much of a jump from what Marshall makes now. Kind of crazy considering how big UNCC is. The problem with that school and sports is that students and alumni come from all across NC, where they grew up as tarheels, blue devils, or wolfpack, and they still have more allegiance to those schools than their own.
However, UNCC does have the greatest name in college sports history, the now alum women's basketball player, Ivana Mandic.

That name has to made up! That is just too funny! Seriously - cant stop laughing (I know I'm 12)..... This thread has gone way off topic, but I just wanted to mention PittsburgH branch campuses (you will get it eventually PA medik). Most all of them are at the Division III level and have pretty terrible sports teams. Their names are like UNC branch campuses with no loyalty to the main campus. The Pitt-Greensburg teams are the Bobcats. I am pretty sure that PSU may be the only school where each branch campus retains the main campuses mascot. You can get a degree at most brach campuses at Pitt where I know that most are 2 or 3 year shcools for PSU. You usually have to go to State College to finish your degree.

I know that UNCC struggles to fill thier arena, and the largest crowd to attend a basketball game did so because Clay Aiken was performing live. Maybe he and Ivana Manthingy could get together......

The name, unfortunately for her, is real. They actually changed it to Ivi Mandic on their website after an espn.com writer included a link to it in one of his columns.

Getting back onto the topic of C-USA and the A-10, maybe LU should try to join CUSA and Winthrop go to the A-10 and then Coastal can get its wish and be a part of the SoCon?

Travel costs would be astronomical and we'd need a 1A football team.

I coached Lacrosse at Winthrop for three years and had the opportunity to meet up with Coach Meyer several times when he was the Assistant Coach there. He gave me the whole low down on his departure from Liberty and I found some things disturbing. Out of respect for Coach Meyer and the University I can not discuss those things on a public forum. But it was interesting conversation. I always felt Coach Meyer did a great job and did not get the recognition he deserved at Liberty.
I have meet Coach Marshall several times and he is a great Guy. He has attended my Church in Rock Hill several times and has brought the team over to our Church, West End Baptist Church in Rock Hill, SC. Even while I Coached Lacrosse at Liberty and commuted to Lynchburg by Plane our Family was big Winthrop Basketball fans because Rock Hill is not that big and it is a local community thing to support Winthrop Basketball. I have taken my Sons to several games at Winthrop. But when Liberty comes I wear my Blue and Red and cheer for the Flames while my Sons hold their Go Eagles Pom Poms.
Because I have meet Greg at Church I believe he is a Christian. But a lot of people would disagree with that because he is so intense and yells a lot and has been known to use some profanity. I don't think it is my place to judge Greg but what I have seen of him on a personal level, he has a good heart and is an awesome Basketball Coach and deserves a shot at a big time program like Wake Forest, South Carolina or Clemson.
I think you Guys need to chill on Marshall a little unless you have meet the Guy in person. I know as a Lacrosse Coach people could say I'm pretty intense too and even judge my Christian walk because I used to yell a lot. I have never used profanity but I do have a reputation in the USL MDIA for yelling at Refs.
Anyway just my two cents.
God Bless,

Laxman:
welcome - it is great having you here. That said, I don't think we were hard on Marshall at all. This was a pretty vanilla thread if you ask me and none of us slammed the man or was overly critical.

Thanks for the different perspective, laxman. I think the general consensus of this board & thread is that he's a great coach who we love to hate (in the tamest use of the word) because he is such a showoff. Its all pretty lighthearted. I think WinthropEagleFan would agree that we aren't too hard on him.

And if yelling, being intense, or swearing is the benchmark- I'm in a LOT of trouble myself.
Anger management, MEDIC, anger management. It's the whole East Coast thing- we're ANGRY people, except for the magnanimous SCAR.

Coaches coach according to their personalities & philosophies. Could eliminate the swearing, though. Obviously, Greg Marshall has done a great job with Winthrop. These universities are investing money into their programs - facilities, coaches, blah blah. The Big South is occasionally trashed on this board, but when you combine the factors: talent, $, intensity; it's not so easy to win.
