Does anyone watch the home games on the LU TV network? All of the home games are on TV for men's and women's basketball games. I think they are shown on local cable in Lynchburg but it goes out all over the country. Leo Lightbourne told me that his peeps watch back in the bahamas. I know a lot of the parents of players from last year seemed to enjoy watching the games. Sarchet, Mantlo, Martin and Dees families all subscribe and they see every game....What do you think of the announcers? Ray Jones and Tim Scarborough?

I assume they would, but does anyone know for sure if Karcher and Dunton talk about Sky Angel in recruiting? I guess that is a nice edge over other I-AA schools.
guest- I personally haven't subscribed to sky angel yet. I was going to, then the guys were playing bad so I decided against it, but after the WU and Bham games, I might still do it this year.

Duntonville -- Thanks for going ahead and registering. We're starting to build some momentum on this site.
I can honestly say I have never seen one of the telecasts. I have a hard time justifying to my wife spending the money on Sky Angel to catch a few LU telecasts.
I can tell you Tim Scarborough (who played ball for the Flames back in my day) e-mailed a few times back when he was first starting. Tim always seemed like a great guy to me.

I don't think the major providers (I have DirecTv) carry the games or even offer them "on demand". I did notice once on a program listing something called "Live from Liberty" but at 0-dark-thirty in the AM and on channel 4- gazillion something.

I'm not sure how it works or anything but if you get sky angel you get like 15 or so channels for $15 a month i think. I'm sure they have a website. It's most likely www.skyangel.com but anyway, one of them is is Family Network (FN) and I believe that's the one that is broadcast over the air in Lynchburg. It's got home bball games and volleyball games. I've never checked for much else. Anyway, I was always under the impression that if you already had some kind of satellite service already you could just get that for an extra $15. I would do it except I live in Lynchburg and it's on adelphia cable here.

Nah, Lynchburg was my home base for job looking operations because it's so freaking dirt cheap to live here. Then I got a job at Genworth Financial (formerly GE Financial) here and bought a house. So looks like I've made my bed for a few years, and now I'll sleep in it.
I've seen that picture of Favre before. I love it.

Well Flanders suck-didily-uks so no Sky Angel for me. Looks like I will have to put on a pot of coffee on Friday nights to stay up for rebroadcasts of Liberty games - no more basketball board spoilers for me.
Though - I wouldnt mind catching the services at Thomas Road on Sunday Mornings. That is how I justified skipping church in my LU days. My parents still road trip to Lynchburg to attend TRBC a couple of times every year.

The announcers really aren't that good. They may be good guys, but don't belong on TV. But you can't really expect a lot, ESPN doesn't really have any good announcers for ESPN+ either. When will they learn, basketball experience does not equal good game-calling. But that's just me, and the only guy I really like listening to call a game is Bill Raftery.

Can we all agree that once we graduate from college that thingy Vitale automatically becomes annoying?

Isn't technology great?
By the way, calling play-by-play or doing color isn;'t as easy as you might think. Some folks are born witht he gift and other have to work like a dog to be successful. The vast majority of regional broadcasts feature neither of the aforementioned.

Some people are born, others are molded with the gift. But as mentioned, rather than give the jobs to the people with those gifts, they are frequently turned over to guys with no broadcasting experience but instead those who may have played for awhile.
Anyone who has ever seen Tim Hardaway on TNT knows what I'm talking about.

Ok guys, I have been reading these boards for a couple of days and Now it is time to weigh in. First of all hello to Sly Fox and some of you others that I know who you are but will not say your names because of annonymity. I really enjoy your comments. I wish the Liberty website would like this board to www.libertyflames.com so we can see more students from all over the big south including Liberty. Yes I am the color commentator for the Flames Television Network and yes I am a former player with Liberty and a former coach. For the most part I have gotten nothing but positive feedback from people who have actually watched but all constructive criticism is welcome. It is not an easy job but it is a lot of fun and Ray Jones is a great partner to work with. He is not a basketball guy (all american wrestler at LU) but he is good at calling games. I try to bring insite, humor and information to the games while entertaining you but not becoming the show like, say, thingy Vitale. I am still working on the craft and someday it would be great to be the Big South announcer full time as well as doing regional games for ESPN. I would love to hear more. Keep the critiques coming. And keep these boards up! Great for LU athletics. SCAR

Tim's comments crack me up. Like the last game when Ray was calling the wrong fouls and said...'We've been off on our foul calls tonight' and Scar corrected him and said, 'no, YOU'VE been off tonight.' I gotta good kick outta that.

Hey Tim (assuming that you are really Tim), thanks for the post. I personally haven't seen any LU TV broadcasts, but I have heard positive things from my friend (even though that friend made a futile attempt at getting the job before you were hired, so multiply the positive affirmation by a few to find out what he really thinks...) That being said, it is good to see that your allegiance to Liberty doesn't start and end when you put the headset on. It's always fun to know that the man behind the mic lives and dies during the game just as we do. By the way, I did see that ESPN is expanding into the college ranks with ESPN U. coming soon, something like 300 college games. So maybe your dream of becoming an ESPN broadcaster may come soon ... (dream sequence::: an LU grad working for ESPN? wow, it can happen... give the rest of us aspiring broadcasters with LU diplomas that much more hope). (I do stand by my Tim Hardaway comment from earlier, though).

Hey Tim ... I'm glad you found this place. It seems word is slowly leaking out that there is a place to meet and discuss the Flames.
Like I mentioned earlier in the thread, I haven't seen any of your telecasts. But I know how difficult of a task you have working by the seat of your pants. If you can manage to be witty and intelligible in addition to getting the facts straight, that is a big bonus.
But since you are here, Tim, go ahead and register and start posting. It would be cool to have more eyewitness reports for those of us unable to attend.
In addition to ESPNU, Fox Sports Net is also launching a college network. And when you factor in all of the new regional networks that are springing up there will be plenty more opportunities for you since you already have the experience thanks to LU. For the first time in my career, I am finally free from the chains of a television contract that kept me from freelancing. So I am starting look around for opportunities. If you hear about anything, give me a heads up.
As for ESPN being the dream sequence, its not always what it is cracked up to be. And if anyone really aspires to go that route, it can most certainly be done. I have a bunch of friends working for them up in frigid Bristol. It is very possible if you are willing to make the sacrifices. At my age, I am no longer willing to endure them. But if you are young & unattached, it can help you springboard to plenty of things.

Sly, Eddantes, Yo. I am officially registered. You will see me as SCAR. I do know where the bodies are burried but don't expect too many juicy tidbits behind the scenes of LU hoops. I will give you my insight as far as Big South basketball and Liberty hoops are concerned. I am glad you guys are active and I hope more people will join soon. It seems a lot of people are out there reading what is written anyway so that is good (I think). Anyway, as far as ESPN is concerned I hope to get a chance to get on their college ESPN U broadcasts soon. Slyfox, you should come up to Lynchburg and see the state of the art studio in the Vines center that was built last year. That by the way is the reason why we can show all the home games of Volleyball, women's hoops and of course the men. I would love to call some women's games soon too. We shall see. Since I am from Philly I have to shout out Donavan McNabb and T.O. (whom I have had a chance to interview personally and seems like a really cool dude). And for the record, Raftery is the best color commentator in the business by far. He is a LaSalle grad and a former coach and at the Big Dance last year, I got a chance to talk with him for a long time about life, hoops etc. Great guy. Enough name dropping, I'm out.

Not to sound like Columbo but "just one more thing." Tim Hardaway was terrible on TV! Eddantes I have to agree with you. Also Eddantes do we know each other personally? Were we at LU together? I know SlyFox was there for the good ol' days of short shorts, paper on the floor after the first bucket, and 4000 screaming fans in the gym feeling and sounding like 10,000!

Hey Scar, glad to see your a member of the board. Welcome! I came across this essay on Sports Illustrated's online site about television commentators: sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2005/writers/dr_z/01/12/drz.announcers/index.html?cnn=yesIt's really a praise/criticism of some of the football broadcast teams out there, but maybe you could take a look at it if you want some pointers. And here's one for you - never, ever say "this game's so silly good, it'll make you want to sop it up with a biscuit." (By the way, here's a shout out to my Philly brethren - I live an hour away from there... I live an hour away from NYC too, but they can't kick field goals...)

Sorry Scar, I was at LU during the last three years of the Hanky era and the first of Dunton's (or as I call it, the Renaissance).

Yo Scar, good to hear from ya. I too, am from the era of the ravine, Liberty Gym, A WRESTLING team (and a GOOD one- the reason I was recruited in the FIRST place) and- evidently- long before these young pups yuppie-ized Gene's pool hall! By the way- the "yo" being the 3rd word of your initial post was the giveaway that you're a Philly boy. Took 2 years for anyone at LU to understand my normal greeting when I attended- NOT a southern thing. ED: you from the 'burbs? Just wondering- we may be closer than we know...

Eddantes,
thanks for the Link. I really enjoyed Dr Z's critiques although he is rough on those guys. I don't have a hugh ego but man I think he would hurt my feelings a little bit if he fried me like that. But then again I would ease my pain by looking at my 6 or 7 figure checks like Madden and some others. These guys make a ton of money at that level. I would never use that Stuart Scott comment that you referred to. Stuart is good at what he does but he can go overboard to let us know that he is hip! Here are some samples of things I have said in the past....During a high school game in Fairfax, VA I said "that kid has more drops than Visine!" It stuck with the kid for 2 years after that so I really try to watch what I say about kids. "That QB is getting beat like a pinata. I'm just waiting for the candy to start coming out of his helmet." These may not read well but they were pretty decent one liners. I try to stay away from those for the most part though but when I do use a line it is usually off the top of my head...Eddantes you must live near Quakertown if you are an hour from Philly and NYC. I was up there recently to watch LU play at Seaton Hall. It was Christmas so I was up visiting family anyway. Chris Toomer was there. He was a member of the 94 championship team and a close friend of mine all the way from Alaska! He played high school ball for Dunton. Eddantes if you come to a home game soon, holla at your boy. It would be nice to meet you. LUConn lives in Lynchburg I think. Or it may be LUPitt. I always get those 2 confused. Would love to meet you guys too.

PAMedic. Yes, the Yo gave me away. It was a real problem communicating with people at Liberty when I first got here too. Sounds like you were on one of those amazing wrestling teams at LU. Too bad they got rid of it as a sport.....The Ravine, ah the memories.
