Very interesting to hear from the ultimate "insider." I know coach will be extremely busy during the season, but it's quite a kick to get his wisdom on all this stuff. What a site, what a crew of members, what a university, what a chancellor, and so on, etc. etc. Don't you guys get mad at me - I just like it. Good night Irene !... we've got the beat writer, the head coach, .... I'm just waiting to see Jerry log on!

GRM you forgot to list the other media guys on the site! Sly knows I need my publicity! Seriously, this is a great forum for hearing inside info. I know Coach won't be able to get on during the season much as they will be working long hard hours (I know first hand) but it is nice to have him on here. I was the one that suggested he get on and address you guys to acknowledge your existance but he has gone the extra mile and we appreciate it. Can't wait to see the 05-06 Flames take the court!

Yes, Scar, I have committed a a grievous and egregious offense in not recognizing that you are an outstanding media person as well, and one who has been faithfully participating, contributing, supporting, and enhancing The Firehouse. Please forgive me, for I meant no slight whatsoever. You know that I have witnessed your work, and have told you personally how impressed I was with that work, and my comments still stand. And thank you so much for getting Coach on. It is all Fantastic !!!! And to PAmedic... What does it say about the presence of a Randy Dunton, when, as one who has gathered crumbs from the table of the master, you are proud beyond words to say "He kicked me in the butt on one glorious day." Congratulations ! Now, if only Dees had maintained your perspective when Coach told him to play defense ..... but we must move on and allow room for others. Oh yes. lol. .... "Look, Mamma, I'm using the jargon of the bloggers." (p.s. what's a blogger?.... am I a blogger... is it wrong for a Christian to blog.. and if not, how often can we blog?)

Don't encourage SCAR. Or ME for that matter. and Mrs PAmedic-2-B says I am getting what I deserve after years of being a poop-stirrer.
And if I can say that, I'm sure you can be a blogger, though I don't think what we are doing here qualifies- you'd have to ask someone under the age of 30 though. I can barely bring up my email.

Maybe he met her on a chat room. I hope he's getting a pre-nuptial, with some kind of reverse, preverted take-off of Exodus 21:10 ("If he take him another wife; her food, her raiment, and her duty of marriage, shall he not diminish.") stating that his time on the Firehouse "shall she not diminish." A man has to establish priorities in this life, you know. I'm aware that PA is a tough, football-loving, hard driving, Medic-Man, but look what happened to Samson. We can't be too careful. Can I suggest some group counselling, with all members of the Firehouse posting counselling questions for the two newlyweds, requiring detailed answers within 1 hour? After all, this is one of "our own." Can we grant to members such autonomy? What would happen if everyone should choose their own wife, irrespective of the wishes of the "Firehouse Gang?" Perhaps we see the need of a constitution, laying all this out.
(Congratulations PAmedic. Proverbs 18:22 "Whoso findeth a wife findeth a good thing, and obtaineth favour of the LORD.")
from your brother in Christ

Hey Coach, you ever thought about sending somebody to check out some of the prep schools like Hargrave Military Academy, Fork Union or Coastal Christian? You can find some real good players at those schools I hear

Coach Dunton,
Last year Brian Woodson brought great ability to penetrate and breakdown defenses. He had good court vision and was very aggressive. He though could be reckless at times and turn the ball over. Evan Risher seemed to be the exact opposite. Evan was conservative being very careful with the ball but not taking chances and breaking down the defense. Could you tell us about Evan Risher's development on the court and how he will contribute to the Flames this season? Is he becoming the point guard you desire with great ball pressure on defense while breaking down defenses and distributing the basketball on offense?

710 - By the time most players arrive in Mouth of Wilson or Gretna that have already narrowed their choices down to a handful of schools who have been recruiting them for up to 5 years. But we do have a verbal commitment from a Goergia kid at Charis Prep down in NC. So we are most certainly working the prep schools.

Not speaking for Coach Dunton but I think Risher is going to run the team well. He understands the game really well from the point guard perspective. His game complements Blair's well as he is willing to let Larry do his thing. Evan is a great kid with not a big ego. I can say this because I am a good friend of Brian Woodson but his ego was out of control at times and I think it hurt the team. He was too confident in his ability to make something happen. Brian did have a great understanding of his teammates abilities and where they could be affective. He made Gabe Martin better for sure. Rish will get pushed for time by Holland too. I loved both of these point guards in high school but college will be and has been challenging. I think they are both up to the task. Ad Damien Hubbard to the mix at Point guard and you have a tough matchup for Big South point guards at the defensive end. There is no Peter Aluma in the program right now but I think Russell Monroe does some things around the goal that Aluma couldn't. I am really hoping for a great year from him. Anyone who watched our telecasts last year can tell you that Ray Jones and me love that kid. I really like this groups, demeanor too. Very nice kids. Even the walk -ons like Levon Alston (who is a really good player btw) and Lamarr Shorts are going to contribute in ways that the average person won't appreciate but will be invaluable to the team's success.

Evan Risher worked very hard last spring and was actually out playing Woodson many days. Didn't come off the summer shooting the ball as well as I would have liked, yet he has been good in practice. His blow by speed is there and his first step on the catch very explosive. I met with his high school coach this fall during my recruiting trips to the land of Sly and his ability to rise about some emotional up and downs continues to be the biggest hurdle in Evan being a dominate Big South point guard. I really enjoy coaching Evan. Last year in a home game against Coastal he recognized that we were in the bonus and drove twice getting fouled for two one and ones giving the Flames 4 big points. Those are plays of a winner. There are alot of positives one week into practice. Jeremy Eck and Justin Holland are going to earn a spot in the rotation. Anthony Smith has the athletic ability and desire to be special. Damien Hubbard is as good of all-around player as we had. Today in our eight minute scrimmage he knock down two pull up 3's, penetrated for a pull up in the lane, posted and rebounded. He played the 1,3 and 4 positions with different combinations. Blair is Blair! Russell is coming but slower than I'd like. Rell Porter has been strong at the four and has knocked down 3's. Doug Stewart and Eric Bigby show flashes. Tyler Baker is going to be a fan favorite in the days ahead. It is early but the message is clear if you want to play than demonstrate competitve greatness in the areas of toughness, discipline and intelligence. Victory is not a negotiable moving target rather the journey that demands our total release of mental, physical and emotional effort. Stay in the fight we headed in the right direction. You guys are a blessing and we are working to give you something to be proud of.

Coach, is Russel Monroe the best-man child you've ever seen grace the butternut home school league? Seriously, I was a huge fan of his last year and would've liked to have seen him more. I guess you feel he wasn't ready last year but he seems like the only guy in D1 basketball who can hit a shot inside the 3 point arc and it not be a layup. Also, speaking of layups, it seemed like a glaring weakness for a stretch of games last year. Has the team improved on that (addition by subtraction e.g. Robinson) or was it just a lack of concentration.
Your #2 fan, LUconn

Smoothie, you gonna meet me in Charlottesville on the 18th? I may get media again but I am not sure since Mrs. Scar will be with me. Let me know. Then you can stay at the crib in Lynchburg for the weekend! Sounds fun right? All we need is Medic and we have homecoming all over again! (minus the football loss ;-))

Brian Woodson is playing some highly productive minutes in Lithuania. Averaging 28pts and 7assists. The GM was asking if we had any other players for their league- good for the future grads. Leo Lightbourne is doing real well also overseas. We made good progress through week 1 and the scrimmage on Sat. showed that Damien, Eck and Bigby will all contribute. Russell was tremendous. Blair and Smith will be a load in league. Back to the practice floor today @3:00, tomorrow @5:45am & 5:30pm then Wed. we scrimmage again. LUconn-Russell had limited understanding of the college game and the homeschool pro- gram provided some opportunity yet not to the depth of preparing his experience to jump in and have the confidence to consistently compete for extended minutes. We have been very physical in our post breakdown drills to develop familiarity which the contact and condition a tougher mindset in finishing. A close shot is not necessarily easy with bodies colliding. If Russell finishes against JMU like he has in practice then he will be a go to guy...more later. Sly-we have two BIG texans scheduled to visit campus the next two weekends. Certainly the big man you know of could be a special space eater for your beloved Flames. Those who work the hardest are the last to surrender. Stay in the fight!

I'd love to see that 7'3" kid that transferred into Cypress Community Christian here in NW Houston give us a look. He's new so he hasn't gotten much attention from colleges yet. But he's on a team that very likely could be USA Today Super 25 by season's end. He's teammates with Steve Tcheingang (PF - 2008) you've no doubt heard quite a but about along with another half dozen DI players that have all converged on one campus primarily because of Hurricane Katrina.
Thanks for the update on practice. I think we're all extremely excited about Russell's upside. A big man can make all the difference in the success of everyone else on the floor.

Excellent, sounds like things are going well so far. How about the decision to schedule Lynchburg College for the regular season as opposed to an exhibition. It doesn't do much for the RPI. Was it simply a matter of getting a date that worked for both schools? Also, I would appreciate it if you humiliated them by pounding them into the ground and doubling up their score. Their media coverage (pre Chris Lang) was ridiculously inproportionate in respect to the importance and success of their program. A nice trouncing would force the News and Advance to report to all of Lynchburg that LU is THE team in this town and all of the attention LC was getting was a mistake.

Coach Dunton, where was the scrimmage held? Was it a closed scrimmage or was it in the Vines Center? Are you planning on having another scrimmage before you go to JMU for a scrimmage? Will it be an open one? It sounds like things are going pretty good. Can't wait to see your boys play.

Sportscritic they usually have scrimmages built into practice. They are usually after a lot of drills and breaking down of various aspects of the game, be it shooting, low post D, denying penetration or transition defense. From that the coaches want to see carry-over from what was just covered in the scrimmage. It demonstrates the ability of the team to execute what is being emphasized and it helps determine who is ready to play when you put people in the seats, refs and whistles on the floor and Camera's in the sky. Usually these things are closed to the public and media (present company excluded). I am in town this week and am headed over to school in a bit to check out practice.

Coach D, I think you need to schedule a scrimmage against former LU alums then have some sort of dinner/festival to get the alum more involved. Some alum might even throw some extra donations your way. You could easily convince me aka Larry Jackson, Scar, Darryl Williams, Hildebrand, Nwosu, Aluma, Boykin, Fatleg even the infamous Marcus White etc... to come back and give your current team a spanking. The only problem is I don't know if you could get a uniform that Scar could get over his head. Just a outside the box suggestion.
