Former Liberty basketball player Jason Allison has joined Duggar Baucom's coaching staff at VMI. Allison, who spent the last two years at King College in Bristol, Tenn., was hired as Baucom's third assistant coach. Allison played for the Flames 1995-98 and coached at Lynchburg (now Liberty) Christian Academy in 1999.
Jason Allison played with Larry Jackson (AKA GOAT on this board) and Aluma and Marcus White. We used to call him Fat Leg. Looking forward to seeing him at the VMI game. We may have to comb the archives for some game footage. He didn't play that much as a walkon and because Marco and LJ played about 35 min a game but has a great basketball mind. Congrats to Jason.

Hi SCAR,
I went to see LJ play at a tournament here in southern Cal when he was completing his Blue Chipper play. Coach was already hot on him, and I was very excited, and added my two cents to the mix. Thereafter, I always claimed responsibility for recruiting Larry. Ted Williams won the triple crown one year, but they gave the MVP to Dimaggio. LJ could and did hoop it up, did play great in a losing cause in the Big South, was a great guy, and did "step up." When you lose, there are always a few who figure you could have done more - but LJ was (and is) the MAN!
I'm happy for Jason, another one of those good guys who coaches would put on the floor more often if you could do it and still win. (Not so much saying others didn't have that, just that he did.) I'll bet he'll add a lot to that staff.

I was in Myrtle Beach one year and saw LJ win a game against Coastal with a 4 point play with less than 5 seconds to go in the game, we were down by 3. Still one of my favorites of all time.

LJ drops be here regularly using the name 'GOAT' ('Greatest Of All Time' ... humility is in short supply on this board ;D).

Sorry Sly, I just created a new way to hijack a thread...Create a different one on the same exact topic :-). Seriously, I didn't even see yours. There are so many posts on this board, I can't keep up with it all. Sometimes people talk to me in threads and I don't even see it for days. I have to get over to the football thread at some point and post my 2 cents since I was roaming the sidelines (1st time in LU football history for me) with givemethemic. Fun stuff! BTW, LJ claims he is the GOAT but my man Bailey Alston gets my vote simply because he scored so many points he made me a part of history by being the highest scoring backcourt combo in school history. We averaged 40 points a game combined our senior year. The points were not exactly split down the middle.

Wow, I go away from the board for a few days and things get pretty heated (Hankinson Thread). Sly blocked the reply on that thread but I know because everyone here knows who I am (thanks to me telling you who I am every time I post a message :-). I need a publicist), that people want to know my thoughts. Really though I think it is time to move on in a positive direction. This is a hard forum to discuss the things alleged on that other thread and quite honestly whatever I say, positive or negative on the things that were said will be taken badly by some and well by others so I will not comment on most of the stuff said. I did get to hang out at the offices and I met Zach Jones yesterday and the atmosphere there was very positive. My man Chuck Martin even let me see the new uniforms for this year. I think everyone will like them. I got to see a few of the guys play pick up yesterday and they looked good. I saw coach Dunton this weekend at the football game and he is very optimistic about the team. Tried to spend time with him yesterday but we kept missing each other and lousy cell phones kept acting up. I for one can't wait for hoops season. I do enjoy my football Flames though. (Post hijacking again)

With alot of the firepower from last year's team gone, it is hard to know what to expect out of LU basketball this year...Actually, there's a few teams in the Big South this year that will be very hard to read due to roster turnover. High Point only returns 26.3% of their scoring from last year. Birmingham-Southern returns 40%, and Liberty returns 43.4%. Even CSU only returns barely half of its scoring (52.8%). That means alot of unknown or unproven guys are going to have to step up this year in the league...it'll be interesting to see what teams can adjust and use their new/unproven guys the best. FYI, for the other teams in the league and the scoring they return from last year: Winthrop (97.7%), VMI (83.9%), Coastal (77.5%), UNCA (67.8%), Radford (59.7%).
And I'm not saying that Liberty can't be good, but only that it is hard to know what to expect from them and teams in their similar situation.

Good info WEF. Looking at the numbers closer, VMI would need to return 200% of their scoring to really make a difference. Sorry Keydet fans out there (if there are any on this board). Radford falls in the category of we don't know what to expect. They also had a few players leave (Holcome-Faye etc.) and a couple of coaches as well. My man Troy Manns is gone from Byron Samuels' staff. The thing we do know is that Winthrop will be really tough but not unbeatable by any stretch of the imagination. From what I have seen in pick up games, Liberty won't miss Dees very much and in some aspects, they could be better. Damien Hubbard and Anthony Smith can play. Blair is going to be better and 6-10 Russell Monroe should see significant minutes this season. Jeremy Eck is 6-9 and plays hard. I think Liberty is going to be very competitive this season. Having not seen the rest of the league much in the off season it is hard to predict where the rest will finish but I am hoping for a Winthrop/Liberty showdown this season. Maybe in the Vines Center in late Feb Early March? Who knows.

Hey Scar, it seems that Holcomb-Faye has remained with RU despite his season-ending suspension last season...He (along with Chris Oliver) keeps the Highlanders from being downright awful, though they have no depth and alot of instability with their coaching. Coastal should be an interesting team this year...Paelay and Leasure can definitely score, but everything else seems up in the air with them now that Buzz is there.
As for Winthrop, this is the first time I can remember them having no holes to fill coming into a season. Obviously the talent that is there is very good and if they can continue playing as well together as they did last year, they should only get better. With the team not needing anytime to gel early on, they could be in good position to do some damage in the non-conference schedule.

I don't think anyone is going to really test WU this season. They were head and shoulders above the rest of the league last year and didn't lose anyone. The only team that looks like they can significantly improve would be UNCA which has a proven veteran returning to the lineup who was out last year--Barber, and didn't lose much in the first place. I think those two will meet in the WU coliseum for the title. As much as everyone likes to hype players, you never know till they play. LU's young players did not impress me at all last year, and Monroe will get killed athletically. Dees is a huge loss. I'm not saying they will be terrible, but I don't see them competing at the top of the conference.
I see it like this:
WU UNCA CCU HP LU CSU BSC RU VMI

You Winthrop guys have every reason to feel confident right now. But things have a way of working themselves out once the ball goes up. I've heard some very nice things about Anthony Smith down here in Texas once I found out he had signed with LU. This kid sounds like he could step right into Dees' role. We all know what out man Blair can do. The determining factor in how well our season goes is down low. If Russell or these JUCOs can step into the gap, we can run with anyonein the league including the Eagles. But its all just talk right now.

I think coach loves Russell's work ethic, his shooting touch, and the way he worked to develop that 7'5" wingspan.

GRM, I appreciate you giving me some luv earlier. I am extremely excited for Fat Leg he has a great work ethic and quiet as kept was one of the best scout team players in America. Fat Leg and Scar use to kill us on Scout Team with Fat Leg runnin the point and Scar at the shooting guard. It has been a decade but Scar could actually put it down back then with authority. If it wasn't for his big head he would have had a 40 inch vertical. Anyways congratulations Jason your patience and perseverance have been rewarded. I know personally that he wanted to be on Coach Dunton's staff this year but it just didn't work out. Liberty's Loss is VMI's gain because I guarantee Fat Leg will be a Division 1 head coach at some point.

LJ those days coaching were fun with you guys. Eric Pothoven used to call me a player coach or a "Ploach" because I was in more drills with a basketball in my hand than a whistle. I used to love to officiate the games too. You guys got away with Murder so you could win and we could get out of there! I still had game back then and could still fly but those days are long gone let me tell you. Funny thing is you guys thought I was old and now you guys are older than I was then! Jason was a really good player to not be on scholarship thats for sure. He was not as quick as you guys but he knew how to anticipate and keep you in front of him. However if LJ heats up Nobody could stop the pull up...Lets not talk about you graduating HEAD of the class. If you got Jason's job at VMI, they would still call you the HEAD coach :-). Maybe we can have a mini-reunion when VMI comes to town. LJ, I hear Boykin is down in FLA but you and me and Jason count as a reunion. You just have to show up. Feb 2, 2006 in the Vines.

I see you still got jokes. I am not coming back to the Vines Center until my number is retired. I came back a couple of years ago to play with an exhibition team to play against Liberty and Coach D should me and Darryl Williams no love. We expected to at least go to Shaker's or something, Coach D said I've got a couple of pizzas left.

Come to Lynchburg for the VMI game and I will take you and Jason out to Neighbors place. Shakers is ok but I like Neighbors. The guys on this board that have not been to Lynchburg in a while may not know about Wyndhurst. It is a new Planned community in Lynchburg. That is where Neighbors place is. Pretty cool...As far as the Jersey, I think you have a valid point. #4 should be up there. Or would you want 13 from Frosh and Soph seasons? Your stats are better than most in the program and are at least comparable to Hildebrand who's #20 is up there (my number too by the way was 20 so I have my number up there :-)).

What part of Lynchburg do you live in? Is the Drowsy Poet still around, they made a mean sandwich. I would go with 4 since I put up decent numbers my senior year with it. Hildebrand's number is retired because he was with Meyer doing the transition to Division 1 and they went to NCAA tourney and he worked out. From a pure basketball standpoint Hildebrand and I put up comparable numbers. I believe I was apart of more big game non-conference wins than Hildo such as VCU, James Madison, UVA, beating Radford @ Radford, Townson St @ Townson, Cal Poly, getting robbed by Eastern Michigan in Hawaii with Earl Boykins and Derrick Dial (NBA players) etc... I could go on and on to validate my point not to mention I was on the dean's list but Aluma, Nwosu, & Hildebrand are all there for a reason. By the way Scar, I was surfing the net and found out that Gabe Caldwell was competing in the Gay Olympics for basketball and track and field. I was trippin!

GOAT,
I won't give you my exact location or anything on this board (in case I get famous one day I don't want to move) but I live in a pretty nice neighborhood I guess. You will have your own room if you stay the night. I call it the Toomer Suite because everywhere I live, Chris Toomer usually drops in from Alaska to hang out and he needs top notch accomodations. Speaking of Toomer, his backcourt mate Hildo did do work in the NCAA game and he was a beast his last couple of seasons. I don't know his big game resume like I do your because I was there for most of yours while I only saw a few of Hildo's. I will say this, both of you made a huge impact on this program and both deserve to have his numbers up in lights....Beating Radford at Radford has not happened since you shot them out of the gym back in 96 I believe. That is an historically tough place to play for Liberty....You forgot to mention that Eastern was in the top 20 that year when we hit the game winning shot that didn't count because of a clock malfunction....Also you didn't mention almost beating Auburn at the buzzer when they had Chris Porter and were also in the top 25 down at Baylor in the Dr. Pepper classic. I believe you had the 3 that would have tied it or it might have been Boykin.....Gabe Caldwell's in the gay olympics huh? That info won't show up in the Liberty Journal. I hope he doesn't have Liberty U under his name in the introductions. That would be wierd. That whole story is weird.

Former Player you are right. #3 would look good up in lights. But Marcus White didn't finish his senior year at Liberty....Oh, you mean the OTHER Texan that wore that number? . I will have to look at the numbers to justify it but based on circumstances alone Caldwell should get Hazard pay as well as a retired jersey for performing under the Hankinson regime.

Does anyone know what Chris is up to these days? I know Formerplayer has to keep up with his Willowridge Eagles.
BTW Formerplayer, I believe Willowridge has received some New Orleans talent as a result of Katrina. But Hightower got the big prize ... PG D.J. Augustine who is regarded as one of the top players overall in the Class of 2006 by some services. The City of Houston got a HUGE influx of football & hoops talent. The football guys are eligible to play UIL this week.

Actually, Hightower is going through the Willowridge stage right now. All the talent has moved on to the newer schools. DJ will basically be the lone star for the Hurricanes (talk about your irony there). Marshall looks to be the powerhouse in Ft. Bend ISD again this season.
If any of you guys have the coaching staff's ear, one of the top PGs in the country for 2007 has landed at Scar's (WHOOPS) old high school in NW Houston, Cypress Community Christian. His name is Biko Davis and the kid is apparently amazing. I had given everyone a heads up about one of his teammates earlier this summer. But we need to be on this kid right away even though he'll have a number of marquee options.
