I'm a little touchy on the subject since they want to put the Nascar Hall of Fame here. There are a lot of other cities that would fit the bill better than Charlotte. Charlotte is an immigrant city with hardly anyone here actually having grown up in the area, thus there are a lot of residents can't stand Nascar, but the good ole boys with a little bit of pull left in the area are trying to make it happen. I've been to a couple of races and honestly the fairest assesment I've seen is that it's mostly small town hillbillies that venture out and spend their life savings on speed week as their vacation for a year. Probably different elsewhere, but man, I don't want this place becoming the mecca.

Its too late, Realist. Charlotte has been the Non-Daytona mecca of the sport for 50 years. Its where the circuit began and still has its strongest fanbase.

And given the fact that the VAST majority of teams base their operations there or are planning to move/build there- its all over, like SLY said.
The fan base is changing as well- look at the corporate sponsorships. Less beer and auto parts distributors, more tech co's, pharmaceuticals, and easily marketed durable goods (food products, retail chains, cell co's, etc). Remember, its not just the main name on the hood or trunk, TONS of assoc sponsors keeping the teams running.
There was a good profile the other nite on CNBC about Nascars' new marketing strategy and how their customer base is MUCH more tech savy, etc. Important fact: the AVERAGE annual household income for the common Nascar fan is now 65,000.00.

I know there's a lot of money in it, and the stats that show people with money enjoy it. I guess the dress and file just don't reflect it in the streets as far as I've seen.

I became a fan this year and I like to think I'm somewhat tech savy. Seriously though, my wife and I both started really watching races this year. We're both North Carolina natives (her great uncle ran moonshine with Junior Johnson) but we never cared about Nascar until this year. I'd like to think we're a part of that "new" Nascar fan base. Well, she most definitely is, even if I'm not. 52% of "new" Nascar fans are now female. Anyway, while the traditional race fans are still there and aren't going anywhere, Nascar definitely has a new kind of fan that's growing in number rather quickly. And yes, if you go to a race in Charlotte the people might be a little more bumpkin than if you go to one at California Speedway. You live in North Carolina. Seriously. Charlotte and the Triangle are definitely yankee containment areas, but most of the population are still natives and a lot of them love the sport that was born there. It'd be a shame if Charlotte missed out on all of that money because yuppies couldn't deal with a few blue collar folks. Or maybe we should let them go back to running 'shine in the cars instead of racing them. We could make a route right through East Trade Street to really give the imports something to talk about.

medic, i listen to your show everyday! anyway the NASCAR hall belongs in charlotte or daytona beach, NASCAR has been getting away from its roots and to put it in Kansas City or texas would be a mistake. though this sport was founded in the south it is now clearly a nationwide sport. im glad it has grown and trying to shed its 'neck status. i grew up going to races at martinsville and richmond , and go to at least 5 or 6 races a year. and it is true many new NASCAR fans are ladies! BTW, even though he is struggling the #24 will make a run for his fifth title, and any hendrick motorsports car to do well! GIT ER DONE BOYS!!

hey- didja see me? I was the guy, ya know, waving- with the #6 visor, in the grandstands. How could ya miss me?
Actually, we go every year- I know several track medics and fireman- do the pits, etc. Sat in Concourse Vista pretty high up this yr- decent seats. Could see real well w/ field glasses (thats BINOCULARS to you SLY). And who knows- doesn't look like Ganassi is gonna release my man- the other little dude-McMurray so maybe we'll get to keep Mark another year.

Gotta agree, though I had made up my mind earlier this year with Mark retiring that I was gonna follow the 42 next year (Ya gotta plan these things out in advance ya know)- couldn't believe my good fortune when Roush announced Jamie would take over the 6.
and Carl Edward is no joke in that 99 car either.

Road course. And I hate them.
Yeah, Mark had a good run (as ususal) but Roush has bigger issues w/ Kurt Busch leaving in '07 to drive the 2 car for Penske. NO ONE saw that coming, obviously not the Cat in the Hat. He seemed kinda POd, but in all reality did the same thing to Ganassi, so call it karma.
Don't really like Kurt anyway (does ANYONE?) so I could care less- gonna pull for Jamie though next year even if he is still in the 42. Good driver, good guy.
ok, mostly because he's vertically challenged.

As far as the chase goes, Tony will be tough- the 48 car is saving it up for the playoffs and Roush looks good mainly because he'll probably field 3 of not 4 cars. Hopefully McMurray will be there, maybe Sadler, and keeping my fingers crossed the whine-bag Jeffy is watching from the outside w/ the 8 gang.
Martin is a virtual lock, sitting 5th w/ 4 to run.
