Very few minorities at the Cup leve (Nextel Cup- top series) and that's something they are working on. Roush Racing and others have people now that work SOLELY on recruiting in urban areas, it's starting to come around but still a LOT of nepotism and family ties. You can't counteract 50+ years of tradition in a short time.
In short, no Asians that I know of- still no FM drivers in Nextel Cup (2 in Busch series: 2nd tier) and a SMALL handfull of Hispanic or black drivers. Still mostly white southerners, but it's NOT 4 guys in greasy coveralls.
Think 400,000 sq ft shops, 500 employees, 20+ cars (per TEAM) costing 200K each and annual sponsorships in the millions. Each decal you see starts in the 10Ks and goes up to 1 Mil for a hood graphic, I believe.

Very impressive, and all that NASCAR stuff looks pretty sharp too. I've even been tempted to buy a jacket with some Dodge Ram insignias.... (I drive a Dodge truck) Thanks for the info.

I've covered plenty of races at Texas Motor Speedway. Its OK. Just not my favorite sport to cover.
As for Terry Labonte, I started out working in his hometown of Corpus Christi and did a ton of stuff with him. I even hosted a weekly motor sports show that covered Terry & Bobby as well as the local tracks & drivers. Terry is a really nice guy and I'm glad to see him helping out Roger & Troy.
As for minorities driving on the Cup level, its been a primary focus os NASCAR the past 3-5 years to search out talent to develop. The circuit would love nothing more than to have a Tiger Woods on wheels to help the sport crossover to even more fans. But you can't force the issue with drivers who aren't ready. With as much money as is available on the Cup level, there now is plenty of enticement to encourga eyoung drivers to stick with the program.

We rednecks root for whoever not just other rednecks. Being a northerner, I like Kenseth who is from WI, but like who I like because I like them. I am latino/native american and would watch this if any color raced or not. I feel it is tradition based and that most of the family lines are white southern men.

Sly - nice comment. Was happy with the race and was glad I did not have to watch the whole thing as it was kind of slow. I love to watch Carl Edwards flip out of his car when he wins! Would love to see a Rousch guy take the whole thing home!

I am glad you posted the article as I only got bits and pieces from the race(napped during some of it). Too bad for Rousch but it helped that he was leaving anyway. Martin did ok yesterday but was sad Biffle didn't win.

I think Denny Hamlin might just be my new driver. I like the way this kid drives. The Number 11 FedEx Chevrolet in 2006? Oh I think so. Rookie of the Year here we come!

Ok so no comments on the last race? I was happy that Tony got it over Jimmy. I liked the Rousch 1-4 place. Martin was great at the end and I wish he would have won, but it was not to be. I have to say I am glad I do not need to sleep through, I mean, see another race for a few months. The last ten races are must see in this house and all I want on some Sunday afternoons is sleep.

put up a roush racing report....that is all you talk about. ;D im not a tony stewart fan, but he is one heck of a driver, so congrats to him. i am looking forward to all the driver changes, and seeing jeff gordon and dale jr. get back in the mix. the 24 had a good stretch run and wound up in 11th place to get the big payday, and it appears that his crew chief change paid dividends. clearly roush and hendrick will dominate team stuff, but im most interested to see how bobby labonte will do going over to petty, and taking over the 43. im looking forward to daytona. hey medic, lets schedule a trip to a race next year!

clearly roush and hendrick will dominate team stuff... While they're not there yet, Gibbs is really putting something together, I think. With Tony cruising the way he did this season (and I'm no fan either) and Denny Hamlin coming in for '06, I think he's making the right moves to start competing with Hendrick and Roush. Hamlin will be rookie of the year in '06. Mark my words.

hey medic, lets schedule a trip to a race next year! absolutely! and actually Mrs. 2-b is a big fan- introduced the sport to me. We've been attempting to get to Charlotte for 5 years and are REALLY gonna make the effort this year. Possibly Richmond as well (?) we do Dover x2 and Pocono yearly but want to mix it up.
