I generally have to live vicariously through the internet when it comes to Flames baseball. And despite being just under a month away from the start of the season, there is precious little info on the official site about the upcoming season.
Here's the schedule:

It doesn't appear the others in the Big South are giving us much respect. The coaches & SIDs have picked us to finish sixth in the 9-team league. Here's the preseason poll: 1. Winthrop (16) 2. Coastal Carolina (2) 3. Birmingham-Southern 4. Radford 5. Charleston Southern 6. Liberty 7. VMI 8. UNC Asheville 9. High Point www.bigsouthsports.com/article.asp?articleid=65647

This is an interesting point Sly- following LU baseball VERY casually, I have noticed not only a lack of respect, but- honestly- a lack of performance. No insult intended, but it seems that we are annual underachievers. Consider the fact that LU has- correct me if I am wrong here- one of the higher enrollment figures in the conference (IE: a large pool of potential talent from which to draw) and arguably one of the nicest facilities in the league, if not the nation. It seems we should do better. OK- start shooting!

First off, our facility is very nice for the Big South. It is nowhere near on par with the top ballparks in college baseball. That's not a slight to our field, just a statement on how nice the facilities have come for major programs in recent years.
I agree that we should be doing much better year in and year out in baseball. We certainly have had the talent. But the past few years have been tough for us indeed. There's no better time than the present for us to turn that around.

when I was down there all they could talk about was former player Sid Bream (sp?) - Pirates I think...we were proud, proud, proud. Watched a few good games down there back in the day. I understand they have a few new structures around the field now? Locker rooms, announcers' booth, something like that?

I'm not sure what the field looked like when you were there in the Reagan administration, but behind homeplate and atop a small hill is the tiny press box, which seats about four people. They usually don't like to have radio people inside there because of its small size.
Down the third base line is the new field house, which took five solid years of on-again, off-again construction before it was finished. In side you have batting cages, offices, a weight room, a rec room, locker rooms, etc.
Additionally, you have a very nice luxury box for watching the games, which has a closed circuit television if and when the games are put on TV. BUT... and this is part of the infinite wisdom of LU's planning department... the field house is parallel to the third base line, and pretty close to it - and this luxury box is located at the top, and runs the length of the fieldhouse. THere are about twenty seats in there, but only three of them actually offer a view of the game. The other ones just give you a really, really comfortable view of the left fielder. You can't see home plate in all but three seats.
(once again, this all would have been avoided if the school just decided to listen to me).

1. thank you for the Reagan comment- I was laughing and my emphezema kicked in, now my pacemaker is going off and I cant find my pills. Confound it.
2. I share your pain w/ regards to our obviously superior intellect, and the rest of the worlds' evident disregard for our advice. It's tough to be a genious surrounded by fools. Things will be different when I rule the world.
Maybe its the blueberry coffee talking.

Very nice, PAmedic. Its fun chatting with kids whose first recollections of the Presidency involved Slick Willie. ;D
Yep, that's the same pressbox they had when we were on campus. When we did the radio broadcasts, we had to set up a cardtable outside. First sign of a threatening cloud, our broadcasts were over.
By the time you had the official scorer and PA announcer in the pressbox, there really wasn't much room for anyone else.
All that said, I generally prefer to sit in the grandstands when covering games as a member of the media.

The Flames are off to a nice start at 3-1. It looks like the newcomers are stepping up very nicely.

well, not really a "preview" thread NOW- but the guys are playing well. we're 8-3 about 1/4 into the season, and putting up some nice numbers (by the looks of the stats on the website anyway)
maybe someone in Lynchburg can give us better info from an on the scene perspective. I'd love to catch a game, but they don't play anyone up here. Maybe because of the 6 inches of snow outside RIGHT NOW. Ugh-

The team may have set a record by beating Fairfield 1-0 in just under 2 hours(1 hour 58min). Most games on the college level take at least 3+.
Flames are now 9-3 on the year

The record is a little deceiving. They really haven't beaten any team that I consider good (mostly teams up north that are traveling south to escape the cold). But give them some credit, it is an improvement over the last 2 years but what we do vs the ACC and the top BSC teams will determine how we really are. I would like to know who set the schedule up. It definately is a little watered down when compared to the last several years, maybe to jumpstart the program a little. I thought that the new fieldhouse was supposed to bring in better teams and improve recruiting. I guess only time will tell.

You can only beat the teams on the schedule. And that's what they have generally done thus far. All these cheap early season victories can play a factor come seeding time in the NCAA Tourney if we take care of business in the Big South.

Winning the Big South might not be that easy with Winthrop and Coastal getting top 20 recognition and other teams picking up some impressive wins (Char Southern's win over Florida for example). Right now I can't count on LU winning the conference unless we can get hot come tourny time.

If I had things my way I would fire the whole coaching staff. The baseball program was ready to take things to the next level between 2000-2002 and now they play pathetic schools and will once again go no where. I would like to see a coach that will stand up for what the program was really about and have a passion for it. Who cares if you can beat the sorry teams they play. Your not going to get recruits playing that kind of schedual and you will never go anywhere.

Ex player - what happened to Greg Pastor's and his coaching staff?

Dave Pastors resigned at the end of the 2002 season. The rest of his staff is still there with coach Royer. I know myself and many other players that were on the team from 2000-2002 are not happy with the way the baseball program is going. We want to see the program pick up were it left off not take steps back. The last few years have been disgusting. We had a team of guys that stood up for what was right and had a strong passion for using our God given talent for him. Our team was passionate about playing for Liberty and wanted to take it to the next level. From what I hear and see these days the passion is gone.

Not every situation is a perfect fit ... for players or coaches. But I do agree that aggressive scheduling helps attract better players and makes us more competitive in & out of conference.
While you are here, ex player, why not go ahead and register and stay around awhile. Guys who are passionate about the atheltci program are always welcome here.

thats our SLY, always the salesman! but he's right X, and you never know who reads this board- maybe someone in the AD's office (or higher!) that needs to understand the passion of current/former students and players. And then capitalize on that w/ a new alum/booster org that will change LU sports for the better. Make our support known!

Just got swept by Birmingham-Southern in our conference opener. I will say this about the Big South...if there is one sport where there is potential to be a major conference, its baseball.

I'd say it wouldnt be that easy....Winthrop and Coastal both have players they say may go in the first round! and their playing good team ball, it's not just a 1 man show
