I'm a Cincinnati native who has covered the Astros now for a decade and a half if you must know.
Yeah, I remember TBS running promos for Braves games a few years back with Sid and the guy who drove him in driving around in one of those old bullpen cars.

First off, let it be known Sid was a few years bafore my time. After leaving the Dodgers, he was with the Pirates when I was at LU. Randy Tomlin went to school with Harrisburg & I and quickly made it to the Pirates right about the time Sid was heading down to Atlanta. Most Braves fans consider that slide on that horrific throw by Barry Bonds their single greatest moment since they left Milwaukee. As much as we should stick to talking about the women's schedule on this thread, to me the greatest moment was the final out of their World Series win in I believe it was 1995

Correct...1995 was the year the Braves won the World Series. As for Sid Bream, I've met him...he's a nice guy, met him at the bookstore...his daughter currently goes to Liberty.

gimmethemic -- Its time to upgrade the board in the main studio. That's the same one we were using 20 years ago. Technology has improved rather significantly.
I can't believe the studio setup is nearly identical to when I was working there two decades ago.
Are Windsor, Pickering & Troxel still there?

Yes they are...and Dr. Troxel's son is actually one of my best friends...and Pickering is still the easiest A I have ever had (easier than Towns, Hindson, any GNED professor...amazingly, I still remember what I learned in his class).

Wow, I remember Steve's kids being around campus when I was there. The thought of them being students now makes me REALLY feel old. But I have to be honest, Troxel hated me as a student. The man hated me. Now Carl & Jim both probably remember me in much more positive vein.

If you mean COMS 110 that class was ages ago for me...I can't really remember much from that far back...I did get a C in it though (should have gotten an A)

Besides the board which isn't that bad we have pretty good equipment, Our equipment for games is really good, VT, and alot of others schools don't have near as good of stuf that we have. We keep getting more and more new stuff too, if you came in and looked around you would notice a pretty big difference then when you were there.

I can't believe the studio setup is nearly identical to when I was working there two decades ago. Hey Sly... I shot you a question on the "off-topic" page but I just found this page. Wanted to clear something up... you must have found some old pictures in the archive...the "monster" board that was constructed out of two boards Rob Branch found in a dumpster (at least that is the story I heard ;-) was tossed out a few years ago. The board in the control room... though not "brand-new" is fairly new to us. Crawford, out of Buffalo, donated it to us back in 2001. I'm guessing they probably got it sometime in the early 90's. We are hopeful that we will be getting a further facelift soon that will come with a new CR board and some other bells and whistles. Working on that as we speak... but we have certainly made some great progress in the last five years. Back in 2000 we were still using cart machines, a board from 1979, the website was about as complex as a word document and we only had two computers in the whole station (and they were slightly more advanced than a calculator.) Now we are completely computer operated and all of our on air rooms have been improved ten fold. We actually had flat screen monitors before WRVL, and they are swimming in money (just joking around, all my WRVL friends... they do a great job there and are one of the top stations in the market.) 90.9 does have some shortcomings (facility stuff mainly...carpet, countertops, etc.) but from a tech standpoint we are pretty close to industry standard for a medium-small market station. If all our upgrade requests come through we should float above the industry standard. At least until it raises again, which seems to happen weekly in this business ;-)

Wow, Rob Branch? I haven't heard his name in forever. He was one of my contemporaries at WLBU.
As for the board, I must be mistaken. But it looks identical to the one we were using back in the Mid-to-Late '80s.
Yeah, the carper and cabinets are definutely the same ones we broke in back in '86 after the studios made the move from the Teachers Ed building across the courtyard (if my failing memory is serving me correct).
Not much of the technology is visible in the pics on the station website. Somebody needs to show some of the new gear when you do your next upload.

I was in Blacksburg today for VT Football day and I was told that the ACC is suppose to relase the Women's Scheudles on Aug 15th. So I would assume that we will have our women's schedule in the next week. Also according to richmond.com that is the first game is no longer @unc but it is Virginia Union again at home on Friday Nov 18th at 6pm. I will keep you guys posted as I continue to get more info.

Should have a full schedule later today. But I went on Rhode Island's website and we open against them in the Florida Tournament on Dec 30th. Florida will play Savanah St. in the other game.

I found out a few more things today. We play Southern Miss first in the NC.ST tourney on Sat Dec 3rd. I don't know who the other team is but we have 5 non-conference games at home. Pretty much the same with Virginia Union, William & Mary, SMU, American and Loyola. The Best chance to see us play is Jan we play our first 5 games at home and the last two on the road. There is some good news though. The American. Loyola, and Winthrop home games are part of a double header with the men. So there will be 3 times in January that you can watch them both play. Something that is also pretty cool in Febuary there will be a double header with UNC Ashville's men and women playing at the Vines Center.

love the enthusiasm, but i think the team will have katie-hangover I don't think so. The bench can get up and down the floor much faster than the senior class alone. The guards haven't had the chance to expose their game because of the offense running through a 6'8" girl. This team in my mind will have a much exciting style of play this year. The bench can play with out Katie as evidenced against Depaul, and even against K-state when she fouled out. The bench played really well after the loss to High Point. Their intensity was at a much higher level. Katie was a great post player for LU but, I am some what glad she is gone. Because the style will be much more exciting to watch. I believe the guards and everyone else will attack the basket a lot more. This team will be an up tempo and physical team this season I think.

You're glad Katie is gone? Are you on meth? Don't get me wrong Sly Fox she was a great post player and the offense centered around her. I am trying to make a point that the other players will have a chance to attack the rim more often and they can get up and down the floor. Katie probably wouldn't handle the up tempo game the Women's basketball team will bring this year. But we will never find out because she graduated or served her four years at the school on the team. She is a post player that probably won't come around this conference anymore. WEF I hope your girls are ready to run for 40 minutes next year against us. This team will be a more uptempo and physical team this year I believe.

I'm no WBB expert but it seems as though the bigger schools that had success did so due to a tough, fast-paced game (LSU). seems to be the direction the sport is heading, at least in WBB.

That is the truth. You made a good point. Alot of the teams in the top 25 have that type of style especially those in the top 10.
