When is that coming out? Just saw the "unofficial" CCU shedule at the other board:
Sep 3 at Elon Sep 10 WOFFORD Sep 17 at App State Sep 24 DELAWARE STATE Oct 1 at SC State Oct 8 OPEN Oct 15 GARDNER-WEBB Oct 22 at Liberty Oct 29 VMI Nov 5 at Savannah State Nov 12 NORTH DAKOTA STATE Nov 19 at Charleston Southern
So from this list I can deduce that our game against CCU may or maynot be on Oct 22. And by my calculation we'll be in East Hartford Sept. 17 or 24 to play the Motor City Bowl champions. I guess CCU makes it a point not to play any 1a programs.

To be fair, they are just getting their program up & running. I seriously doubt they anticpated the kind of success they enjoyed this past fall.
As for an LU schedule, it generally comes out VERY late in comparison to other schools. I can go look at where the Texas Longhorns will be playing on any particular Saturday anytime in the next 5 seasons. But Liebrty seems to have trouble posting a football lineup just six months before opening kickoff. Doesn't make much sense to me. They have to things basically set.

While we continue to wait for the official schedule to be released, here is what I have found so far:
Sept. 24 - @ William & Mary Oct. 22 - Coastal Carolina
Also, it doesn't appear we will be playing UConn this fall based on their schedule projections.

Coastals schedule is changing with James Madison replacing Wofford and the deal with NDSU falling through.
As for CCU not playing any I-A teams, NCAA rules require a team to have the full 63 scholarship players on roster for three years before a game with that team can count towards bowl eligability. 2005 will be the first year for Coastal with the full 63 schollys. They do plan to get one or two I-A games in 2008.

I think LU's schedule opens with a D-2 school, followed by 1-A UCONN. It also includes William & Mary, UT Chattanooga, Norfolk St., Towson, and Youngstown St., plus the 4 conference games. Not sure about the dates.

I saw a schedule for U-Conn that doesn't include LU. Perhaps we don't pick up the other contest on the contract until next year.

VMI unveiled their schedule the other day so we now have a third tentative date:
Sept. 24 - @ William & Mary Oct. 1 - VMI Oct. 22 - Coastal Carolina

UConn finally released a final 2005 schedule and we are headed to Storrs this fall after all. We'll be there September 10th. But it appears we are also really upgrading our other non-conference competition this fall. I just found a release from tiny Concord University that says they will be facing the Flames in a season-opener. Its that tiny school over in West Virginia where 460 hits the WV Turnpike. I think they are in the same league with WV Tech that we've been scheduling the past couple of years in several sports. So here are the tentative dates I have found thus far: Sept. 3 - Concord Sept. 10 - @ UConn Sept. 24 - @ William & Mary Oct. 1 - VMI Oct. 22 - Coastal Carolina

Thanks, c89. So despite Liberty protecting the schedule like it is Colonel Sanders' original recipe, we're figuring this thing out:
Sept. 3 - Concord Sept. 10 - @ UConn Sept. 17 - Youngstown St. Sept. 24 - @ William & Mary Oct. 1 - VMI Oct. 8 - ? Oct. 15 - ? Oct. 22 - Coastal Carolina Oct. 29 - ? Nov. 5 - ? Nov. 12 - @ Charleston Southern Nov. 19 - @ Norfolk St.

The other open dates look like Gardner Webb, UT Chattanooga, and Towson. We were supposed to play Hampton and Eastern Michigan. Maybe a mixup is scheduling dates. The schedule looks okay but certainly could use some improvements. Adding a 12th game would help if we could schedule a quality team from a power conference

That Eastern Michigan game could be ugly. Any other old hags remember the away game where we beat (I believe it was) Central Michigan many moons ago? And I know we kicked this around before, but WHY can't we schedule JMU: At least a good 12th game, if not a great in-state rivalry- which I think it is (or could be again) as well.

Actually it was Eastern Michigan. Justino to Green w/ 11 seconds to go LU 25-24 which put LU @ 5-0 on the season and they still didn't make the playoffs that year. Shortly after that game a very nice 7 page article in Sports Illustrated titled "Thou Shall Not Lose"

"Thou Shall Not Lose"-MUAHAHAHAHA-thats funny. Anyway, being a local and a student I also heard rumors that we were trying to schedule Richmond and that we wanted to keep William and Mary on our schedule after next year. Hmm, lemme go see if I can find Richmond's schedule...as to the JMU question, we did schedule them my freshman year here (and I'm a sophomore now). So its possible they may return.

The Virginia Big5 would be:
LU VMI UR JMU W&M
Play a round robin each year. Scheduling in I-AA is a nightmare. A set round robin like deal would solve that problem and allow for reasonable travel $$$ - I also think this deal would generate significant interest throughout the state.

ok- I'm w/ ya on that one- esp the JMU connection. I'm sure YOU remember the ol' days w/ the JMU vs. LU football games. They were the BEST. love to see that rivalry again- I've been whining about that for the last 3 months though, no one else wants to hear it anymore!
hey A-train, join up man! you can stay anon and not reveal your ID on campus! plus, we need an insider connection.

No reason that games shouldn't be played. Back in the day that was THE GAME. LBC I mean LU - that was the one we all wanted. Back to Back wins in 85 and 86 for the Flames!

Harrisburg --- First off, welcome to the board. I see you have dived right in with your posts. Cool.
As for your VaBig5 concept, it works great from LU's perspective. But the other schools int he list all seem pleased with where they are headed in this latest wave of realignment. The Spiders, Dukes and the boys from Williamsburg would all make great conference rivals. But I just don't see it happening right now.
Yeah, back in the Late '80s our games with the Dukes were a focal point of the season under Hout. But unfortunately, JMU has progressed in their program while we have floundered. If we were winning more it would probably be easier for us to schedule them. But we would be a hit on their strength of schedule for the I-AA playoffs right now.

I for one think he had LU moving in the right direction after the 1988 season. He had taken us from DII to DI-AA with an 8-3 record. I often have wondered if he had been given a few more years if things would have been different. Not taking anything away from Coach Rut but I liked Hout's approach recruiting the Seminole and Western District kids back in the day. Lots of Central VA kids on his squads.

I never liked the whole Ruteggliano (sp?) thing- we were all SOOO convinced Tom Landry was coming, then it seemed like we settled for Sam when he came avail from the NFL. just a bad idea. (good times, good times)

i think the administration was looking for a quick fix in Coach Rut. Hout inherited Dowling's 1983 team that went 2-9. He also inherited a much tougher schedule and the move to D-IAA. He struggled in 83, 84 and then the practice facilities were washed away in 86. Hout had no recruiting benefit from a facilities standpoint (even though I like City Stadium). In 88 Hout went 8-3 was the Virginia Coach of the Year. It just seemed to me his firing was a mistake. That's why part of me says give Karcher a chance. He's 6-6 and 6-5 in his last two years - but certainly we all hope he can take the next step.

I ran into coach Rutigliano back in late January at Kroger here in Lynchburg. He came up to my car and we had a great chat. One of the most charismatic people you will ever talk to. When I was coaching here in the mid 90's in hoops coach Naz (Paul) and I would love to go to Flames Club (LUAA back then) to hear 2 things: Jerry Edwards say the word Ragazzi's and Coach Sam convince us that they were going to win the National Championship. Boy was he a good speaker. As far as coaching, he did have some good years. That Robbie Justino led team from 1990 was good enough for post season but they didn't get the votes. Eric Green was on that team. They beat 1A Central Michigan that year I think...BTW coach Sam is doing well coaching in NFL Europe and working in Tampa's organization. He was here in Lynchburg visiting his son Paul. Great guy. However I am a Morgan Hout fan too. They were just turning things around when he got the AX.

I really liked him too. We were fortunate to have him at LU. I'm like you - I liked Coach Hout and I felt bad how things ended for him. I also happen to think Coach Karcher will get these guys moving in the right direction - the last 2 years are proof of that.
I was also a big Jeff Meyer fan - I hope that doesn't step on any toes!

no toes stepped on, its just that we're all OLD and no one else on this board has a CLUE what we're talking about. Also, H'burg- what'd you like best about City Stadium- the COMPLETE lack of grass or all the ROCKS impregnated in the field? Oh yeah- almost forgot the hideous bus rides to and from (I couldn't afford a car back then, until I bought my HOT HOT HOT '70 Nova. That was a Chevy product, for all you guys born after 1985)

Scar, the next time I see you, I want to hear your Jerry Edwards "Ragazzi's" imitation. Or maybe I'll just ask him to say it for me. Also, I was a student at LU when Rutigliano was named the coach. I liked Hout but I was excited that coach Sam was coming. Growing up in Ohio as a Cleveland Browns fan (THE CARDIAC KIDS), I thought it was great having him at Liberty.

V88,
I will have to let you hear the Ragazzi's imitation but it is best coming from Jerry himself. Classic. There are certain things that he says that only he can say. Between he and coach Sam, Flames club was actually pretty fun back then...I am sure you were stoked when Rutigliano came as was the entire student body. I used to root for the Browns in the playoffs then because coach Brooks (assistant on Men's hoops) would live and die by their progress. Of course those were the days when Elway would beat them on the last play every time. Sorry to dig up old wounds Browns fans out there. As you know V88 my partner Ray Jones is also from Ohio but I think he is a Bengals fan!

Scar --- Where is Ray from? I'm a Cincinnati native myself?
As for City Stadium, it was the poorest excuse for college facility I've ever seen. But it was cheap to rent. Thanks to Art Williams stepping up with the jack to get a field up on campus. Those bus rides were brutal.
Viva Kelvin Edwards!
